Nicknamed the philosopher of the forest, Sam Campbell was a writer, photographer, radio personality, promoter, lecturer and especially a devoted student of living nature.  His summer home, which he titled  the Sanctuary of Wegimind, was a game preserve in the forests of northern Wisconsin, near the town of Three Lakes.  There he studied, mainly in the summertime, the ways of wild animals, "their habits, their work, their play, and the examples they set for human beings in right living."1

The rest of his time was usually spent traveling throughout North America and abroad to share a kind-hearted version of environmentalism.  Sam was, in fact, one of the great pioneers of the modern environmental movement.  His amazing popularity, born of a natural joy and friendliness, eventually led to a sponsorship with the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad.  Under this sponsorship he traveled as an official promoter of the North Woods and of travel in general, giving lectures to share his work in nature, his humorous anecdotes, his travel experiences, his vision for conservation, as well as tactful words here and there to promote faith in God.  These lectures were always accompanied by silent color film footage taken by Sam, which, combined with his delightful narration, made his presentations extremely popular events in a day of fewer diversionary options.  Millions of people became aquainted with Sam through the multiple thousands of lectures delivered in schools, churches, and many other organizations for 32 years, as well as through his "Sam Campbell Nature Tours," his famous story books, several early books of philosophical musings, or a one-time radio series.  At one time Sam was considered by some to be the most sought after lecturer in America, and he had undoubtedly reached record audiences for his era.  Sam's lasting influence, however, has been extended well beyond the popularity of his lifetime--and has passed on a legacy spanning generation gaps--mainly through his outstanding story book series to which this site is dedicated.

Toward the early middle of this time period, and while the world was fast becoming embroiled in the turmoil creating World War II, Sam Campbell decided to write a light-hearted yet philosophic story book about a much loved Porcupine friend named Inky. This entertaining story, based on his true-life work with animals and people, created a public demand for more of the same.   Throughout the course of the rest of Sam's lifetime he turned out one of these story books about every year or two, and the result of this work has left a series of twelve truly inspiring and entertaining books about the humorous antics, friendship and wisdom of forest life.

Not mere story books, the fun true-life adventures sprinkled with profound wisdom, have appealed to children, college students and mature adults alike.  Their appeal has now spanned several generations, providing deep encouragement and insights for our hectic and stress-filled lives, to those who have stumbled upon this valuable series.  It is called the Forest Life series (republished as the 'Living Forest Series').  Originally published by the Bobbs-Merrill company, and later reprinted by Pacific Press Publishing Association, the series had very recently been completely out of print so that books became difficult to obtain.  That fact led to the creation of this web site, and we are delighted to tell you this is no longer the case! Two companies now have offerings.  A couple of titles were recently republished by Teach Services Publishers.  However, the entire set now has again been put into print--hard cover and paperback--by AB Publishing Company
