April 1, 2007 Alvin & Dorothy Bartholomew sent the following comment: Just want to say thankyou for keeping the memory of Sam Campbell alive and well. I don't remember for sure but was probably the late '40's or early 50's when I read my first Sam Campbell book. Don't even remember which one it was, but do remember reading every one of his books I could get my hands on. Today my wife Dorothy and I have those books on our shelves for our grandkids and any other child that happens to visit our house. I had the pleasure of meeting Sam & Ginny in Bellingham, Washington in the mid to late 50's when they came to share their movies of their animals and cabin in the woods. This afternoon we were in the Adventist Book Center in Spokane, Washington. We now live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and they had the DVD of Sam's film clips there and we purchased it and viewing it here at home this evening it awakened many memories. Thank you. God Bless You, Alvin & Dorothy Bartholomew Email: prayshymn@roadrunner.com"
October 6, 2006 The following excerpts are from a personal recollection sent by Ira Heinrich about his friendship with the Campbells: Among my most precious possessions are copies of Sam's very early felt-bound little books, as well as what I presume to be one of a very few copies of "The Conquest of Grief". These were gifts to me from Giny... ...I was 16 when I traveled to Three Lakes and was met by Giny at the small cabin where I was staying. Innocent times! ...Giny talked constantly as we drove, and when she stopped at a little store for "supplies", I helped her load bags and boxes of tidbits intended for the coons and other little people she was still faithfully feeding. "My food bill for all these animal friends far exceeds my own!" she said. I ... recall the several days I spent on the island with Giny, reading at Sam's desk, wandering the trails with her to Vanishing Lake, listening as I tried to sleep to the whispers of the forest all about and the whispers of Sam's spirit which was so powerfully present. I remembered then the moment when I read Giny's note telling me of Sam's passing, and how I wandered in the forest near my home, just a small boy at the time, crying in solitude for this man whose spirit I so much loved. ...an enthusiastic young ... film-maker, I embarked on the project of adapting two of Sam's books (Tippy Canoe and Moose Country) into a theatrical film. Although for various reasons this film was never made, the project did produce a film script, which I wrote with Giny's counsel and input. ...She put into my hands all of Sam's original film, many reels of it, along with his typed notes, used as "cue-sheets" during his lectures.... [I] still treasure the opportunity I was given to study those films and notes over and over again. They are etched in my memory.... I am a writer, and spent many years as the founder and manager of a conservation organization, through which I designed and conducted hundreds of interpretive wilderness tours, telling the stories of the land to thousands of school children. Sam Campbell was my first mentor and teacher. The rhythm of his language seeped into my own. The deep spirit of his teachings literally informed my whole life. I consider it one of the miracles of my life that I was brought to Sam Campbell's knee when just a young child, and was able later to call Giny my friend, and treasure the small, rare mementos that she gave me. She said, when handing me those little books, "These are really from Sam, to you." I simply wanted to share this little story, an experience that has remained private and really unknown these 45 years. Thank you for keeping Sam's life and work available. Ira Heinrich"
July 25, 2006 Heidi Nykolayko sent the following comment and PHOTOS about her animal work in Three Lakes: Thanks for getting the DVD to us so quickly! We watched some of it last night. My husband knew Giny when he was a child. We live on Big Fork Lake, not Four Mile. Two years ago a friend of ours was staying on Sam's island so we got to visit and see the cabin. I am licensed to do wildlife rehab at home, so I am currently raising 7 orphaned raccoons, since the Northwoods Wildlife Center won't rehab them. Unfortunately it is much more regulated now and the poor babies have to be in a cage. Wish I could raise them the way Carl Marty used to raise them. I've attached a couple of pics I thought you would enjoy. Thanks again for sending the DVD! Heidi Nykolayko"

R. Ghormley sent the following question about books on CD: enjoy books on tape or CD. I think that they might be very successful. Thanks for keeping this material available. Sincerely,
ANSWER:
Great idea, and if you know of anyone who has
a really good reading voice,
Martha Margrave asked the following question: I’m not a real computer person (my children would certainly agree with that statement) but i have surfed before looking for information about Sam Campbell. When did you post your website? If you don’t mind me asking…why did you? I’ve been trying to collect his books since long before eBay and i had a terrible time finding them. Our 6th grade teacher in Pine Bluff, Arkansas read them aloud to us and i could remember the names of the animals but had no idea what the titles of the books were. I’m 56 so by the time i started my search in earnest, Miss English was long gone and no one knew what had happened to her estate, such as it would’ve been. I couldn’t even find anyone who had taught with her and the friends from grade school that i could find don’t even remember the stories! How could it be that i was so profoundly affected by them, yet none of them remembered them? Of course, it did not help one little bit that all those years i was searching for books about animals by Sam Kampbell!!!! Also, i think that i was looking more at children’s books and really, they’re not! After years of teaching, when i found the first one and read it for myself, i realized that Miss English did exactly what i’d been trained to do, which is to read aloud to children as much above their personal reading level as their interest will allow. I was looking for green books by Kampbell in the children’s section of antiquarian book fairs! No wonder i had such bad luck! I have most of the books now, and i’d love to be in touch with others who loved them as much as i do. If you have time and the interest, please let me know exactly how you came to know of Sam Campbell and when you established the website, etc. Thank you so much! marti" ANSWER:
June 3, 2003 Julie Williams asked the following question: You can find two Sam Campbell books -- Loony Coon and Sweet Sue -- at www.themailbox-books.com . Any source for the others? Thanks -- Julie" ANSWER:
October 22, 2002 Richard Reed sent the following question: ANSWER:
Beyond that, various bits from Sam's filming do exist; the Three Lakes Historical Society can tell you more about this. These will soon be in process to make more DVD's available. However, when I have investigated the location of Sam Campbell's films, I have had others tell me that a great bulk was possibly thrown away by someone who didn't think they were of any value. I have not verified this story though I had no reason to doubt the source. **If there is anyone else who has information about Sam Campbell films, PLEASE WRITE TO iam@dennisberlin.com, and I will place the information in this section!** |
