Alvin & Dorothy Bartholomew sent the following comment:
"Dear Dennis,
Just want to say thankyou for keeping the memory of Sam Campbell alive and well.  I don't remember for sure but was probably the late '40's or early 50's when I read my first Sam Campbell book.  Don't even remember which one it was, but do remember reading every one of his books I could get my hands on.
Today my wife Dorothy and I have those books on our shelves for our grandkids and any other child that happens to visit our house.  I had the pleasure of meeting Sam & Ginny in Bellingham, Washington in the mid to late 50's when they came to share their movies of their animals and cabin in the woods.
This afternoon we were in the Adventist Book Center in Spokane, Washington.  We now live in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and they had the DVD of Sam's film clips there and we purchased it and viewing it here at home this evening it awakened many memories.  Thank you.
     God Bless You,
     Alvin & Dorothy Bartholomew

The following excerpts are from a personal recollection sent by Ira Heinrich about his friendship with the Campbells:
"... I am one of the countless, nameless adults in the world whose life was profoundly influenced by the exquisite simplicity of Sam Cambell's life, writing and teachings.  And I had the rare privilege of spending time at the  Sanctuary with Giny after Sam's death.
Among my most precious possessions are copies of Sam's very early felt-bound little books, as well as what I presume to be one of a very few copies of "The Conquest of Grief".  These were gifts to me from Giny...
...I was 16 when I traveled to Three Lakes and was met by Giny at the small cabin where I was staying. Innocent times! ...Giny talked constantly as we drove, and when she stopped at a little store for "supplies", I helped her load bags and boxes of tidbits intended for the coons and other little people she was still faithfully feeding.  "My food bill for all these animal friends far exceeds my own!" she said.
I ... recall the several days I spent on the island with Giny, reading at Sam's desk, wandering the trails with her to Vanishing Lake, listening as I tried to sleep to the whispers of the forest all about and the whispers of Sam's spirit which was so powerfully present.  I remembered then the moment when I read Giny's note telling me of Sam's passing, and how I wandered in the forest near my home, just a small boy at the time, crying in solitude for this man whose spirit I so much loved.
...an enthusiastic young ... film-maker, I embarked on the project of adapting two of Sam's books (Tippy Canoe and Moose Country) into a theatrical film.  Although for various reasons this film was never made, the project did produce a film script, which I wrote with Giny's counsel and input. ...She put into my hands all of Sam's original film, many reels of it, along with his typed notes, used as "cue-sheets" during his lectures.... [I] still treasure the opportunity I was given to study those films and notes over and over again.  They are etched in my memory....
I am a writer, and spent many years as the founder and manager of a conservation organization, through which I designed and conducted hundreds of interpretive wilderness tours, telling the stories of the land to thousands of school children.  Sam Campbell was my first mentor and teacher.  The rhythm of his language seeped into my own.  The deep spirit of his teachings literally informed my whole life.  I consider it one of the miracles of my life that I was brought to Sam Campbell's
knee when just a young child, and was able later to call Giny my friend, and treasure the small, rare mementos that she gave me.  She said, when handing me those little books, "These are really from Sam, to you."
I simply wanted to share this little story, an experience that has remained private and really unknown these 45 years.  Thank you for keeping Sam's life and work available.

Ira Heinrich"

Heidi Nykolayko sent the following comment and PHOTOS about her animal work in Three Lakes:
"Dennis,
Thanks for getting the DVD to us so quickly! We watched some of it last night. My husband knew Giny when he was a child. We live on Big Fork Lake, not Four Mile. Two years ago a friend of ours was staying on Sam's island so we got to visit and see the cabin.
I am licensed to do wildlife rehab at home, so I am currently raising 7 orphaned raccoons, since the Northwoods Wildlife Center won't rehab them. Unfortunately it is much more regulated now and the poor babies have to be in a cage. Wish I could raise them the way Carl Marty used to raise them. I've attached a couple of pics I thought you would enjoy.
Thanks again for sending the DVD!

"Wow!  This is so cool.  I remember going to one of Sam's lectures as a child.  He is soooo loved in my family.  what a treasure this is.  Thank you for making this available.  . . .  I would really like to have a third copy of the DVD.  Any chance you have another?  You see, I have a brother and a sister who are both going to want to have this, not to mention me!
Sincerely yours,
Mary Miller"

"Are you the one that is putting A Tippy Canoe and Canada Too online?  If you are I just want to say thank-you.  My 21 year old son is in prison.  He has been since he was 15.  I read all these books to my kids when they were younger.  I sent him the first 55 pages of the above book to re-read and today I just printed out the next 48 to the end of chapter 12.  I wait anxiously for it all to be done so I can send it all.  He was an outdoor kid and he just wrote to thank me for the first 5 or 6 chapters.  Keep up the good work.  I can't send him books but I can send him it this way."

R. Ghormley sent the following question about books on CD:
"I have a couple of Mr. Campbell's books that used to belong to my late father.  I have enjoyed reading them to my children, over the years.  Has anyone considered putting the books on CD?  I'm a voracious reader, but as a person who lives beyond the reach of television service, I also
enjoy books on tape or CD.  I think that they might be very successful.  Thanks for keeping this material available.

Sincerely,
R. Ghormley"

ANSWER:
I have considered putting the books into an audio form, myself, but my
personal time constraints are such that I cannot (this is only a hobby to attend to in personal time, which I have a very limited amount of)...

Great idea, and if you know of anyone who has a really good reading voice,
equipment, interest and time, please let me know.

Martha Margrave asked the following question:
"Amazing!  Thank you so much for writing back, Dennis.  I have not found another person who knows of Sam Campbell’s writing in years of asking.   I was very glad to find your website last night.
I’m not a real computer person (my children would certainly agree with that statement) but i have surfed before looking for information about Sam Campbell.  When did you post your website?  If you don’t mind me asking…why did you?
I’ve been trying to collect his books since long before eBay and i had a terrible time finding them.  Our 6th grade teacher in Pine Bluff, Arkansas read them aloud to us and i could remember the names of the animals but had no idea what the titles of the books were.  I’m 56 so by the time i started my search in earnest, Miss English was long gone and no one knew what had happened to her estate, such as it would’ve been.  I couldn’t even find anyone who had taught with her and the friends from grade school that i could find don’t even remember the stories!  How could it be that i was so profoundly affected by them, yet none of them remembered them?
Of course, it did not help one little bit that all those years i was searching for books about animals by Sam Kampbell!!!!  Also, i think that i was looking more at children’s books and really, they’re not!  After years of teaching, when i found the first one and read it for myself, i realized that Miss English did exactly what i’d been trained to do, which is to read aloud to children as much above their personal reading level as their interest will allow.  I was looking for green books by Kampbell in the children’s section of antiquarian book fairs!  No wonder i had such bad luck!
I have most of the books now, and i’d love to be in touch with others who loved them as much as i do.  If you have time and the interest, please let me know exactly how you came to know of Sam Campbell and when you established the website, etc.
Thank you so much!
marti"
E-mail address is mmargrave@comcast.net

ANSWER:
I am glad you finally found the books by that Kampbell guy! : )
Sam's books have meant a lot to me personally, because they helped me through a couple of really rough times in my young life.
I actually grew up with the books in our house, and I remembered my mother (about your age) reading them from time to time, but I always assumed that they were either children's books or boring, since they were just about animals.  It wasn't until I entered college in the early 90s that I finally picked up a Sam Campbell book.  I went through a really stressful time in my life, with corresponding major depression, around the time I started college, and frankly I was getting a bit burned out in general.  One day I felt like reading something, but I needed something that wouldn't be too heavy.  I remembered those simple looking books that my mom used to read, and thinking they were children's books, I imagined they might be really simple to read.  I checked one out and was greatly suprised at the effect it had on me.  Sam carried such a beautiful refreshing picture of life with him and some of the best aspects of his life philosophy came through in the story books he wrote.  It was a very sane perspective and full of a wholesome kind of humor.  It contrasted very sharply with the mean picture of the world that had been weighing on me at the time.  Reading one of his story books also helped to salvage my faith in God, which had been secretly teetering on the brink at the time.
I later had a similar, even profound, experience with the books, at another time, when I was first starting out in my career as a pastor, and very much needed a sane perspective to get my mind off of some very distressing issues.
It just so happened that by that time I was married and looking forward to having children some day, so I thought it would be good to buy myself a complete set of the books to read to my children in the future.  That is when I discovered that the books were completely out of print, and that used copies were getting so difficult to find that some were selling for very big bucks on online auction sites as rare items!  I began calling publishers and doing research, to try and get the books back in print, etc.  Long story, but that is when I decided to start a web site.  That was about 6 or 7 years ago now, and a lot has changed, including the books being reprinted, etc.  However, I've been collecting video over the years, and I have captured interviews with many Campbell friends who are or were still living, as well I have digitized more than 14 reels of rare Sam Campbell films (big ones) that I came upon in researching Sam Campbell, and was given the use of.  I have had intentions of finishing a project I started 4 years ago, of a video about Sam's life, but my life is so crazy busy all the time (this is only a hobby--my family and work responsibilities take priority), that I have to keep delaying on these kinds of secondary projects.
I hope I answered your questions a little bit.
It is a pleasure to correspond with you.
God Bless,
Dennis Berlin

Julie Williams asked the following question:
"Hi, Dennis,
You can find two Sam Campbell books -- Loony Coon and Sweet Sue -- at www.themailbox-books.com .
Any source for the others?
Thanks --
Julie"
E-mail address is jwoldnews@worldnet.att.net

ANSWER:
Yes, there are other possible sources.  One is www.abebooks.com and then there are places like eBay or Amazon.com .  A couple of books are back in print now, and available from Three Lakes, Wisconsin Historical Society ( http://www.nnex.net/~robwack/campbell.htm ).  Those titles are Sweet Sue's Adventures and Seven Secrets of Somewhere Lake.

Richard Reed sent the following question:
"Do you have any idea where we could find copies (or originals) of the Sam Campbell nature movies?  Thanks, Richard Reed (rreed@trinity.edu), Cumberland, WI"
E-mail address is AvaYva@aol.com

ANSWER:
Thanks to Doris Goldsworthy of Three Lakes, WI, I have had the use of five reels of film cut-offs covering many years of Sam Campbell films.  I recently finished creating a DVD from the digital video which I produced from the film Clips (see above ad).

Beyond that, various bits from Sam's filming do exist; the Three Lakes Historical Society can tell you more about this.  These will soon be in process to make more DVD's available.  However, when I have investigated the location of Sam Campbell's films, I have had others tell me that a great bulk was possibly thrown away by someone who didn't think they were of any value.  I have not verified this story though I had no reason to doubt the source.

**If there is anyone else who has information about Sam Campbell films, PLEASE WRITE TO iam@dennisberlin.com, and I will place the information in this section!**

"Hi Dennis:
I have a signed first edition hardcover with dust jacket of On Wings of Cheer.  The only wear on the book is at the tip of the corners of the back cover.  The dust jacket has five tears less than 1/4 inch and shows signs of handling at the top and bottom but is otherwise clean and unfaded.  There is a book plate inside the front cover behind the front inside dust jacket flap.  Sam Campbell's signature is on the front end page.  The binding is tight.  This book was well taken care of.  This exceptional copy is $30.00 plus shipping...
Thank you

Candi Strecker sent the following message:
"I currently have one hardcover copy of Sam Campbell's "A Tippy Canoe and Canada Too" for sale. It's a nice reading copy, NOT a former library copy, with copyright date 1946; very solid in its binding although the green cloth of the covers is a bit scuffed; there are no markings inside except an owner's name neatly written inside the front cover. There is a dustjacket, but it's quite torn and taped-up. On a scale of "Like New / Very Good / Good / Acceptable" I'd rate this copy as "Good."

The book is $10.00,  which includes shipping by Media Mail within the US. If

"Hello,
I'm a stay-home mom who sells used books on ebay.com. I was looking for a description of "Fiddlesticks and Freckles" when I found your website. I have two books that I'd like to sell. The above mentioned one and "Eeny, Meeny, Miney, Mo and Still Mo". They are both hardbacks. I'll attach scanned pictures of each with this email.
Fiddlesticks - Former school library book with a few stamps inside, card sleeve on inside back cover, spot on the spine from old sticker, faded library lettering on spine. Some wear to cover corners and spine ends. Tight binding. No marks or scratches to cover. No writing inside. Copyright page states 1955.
Eeny - Former school library book with a few stamps inside, card sleeve on inside back cover, library lettering on spine. Some wear to cover corners and spine ends. Tight binding. No marks or scratches to cover. No writing inside. Copyright page states 1945.
I'd be more than happy to answer any questions about these books. My feedback on ebay is excellent with over 5,000 positive transactions. Someone recently offered me $8 per book but backed out of the sale. Any reasonable offer will be considered. All my books are packaged well and shipped the day after payment is received.
Thank you for the opportunity to offer these books. I look forward to hearing from you.

NOTE:  Books may sometimes be found on web sites such as eBay.com or Amazon.com as well as in any number of used book sites online or off.  To find online used book dealers I suggest that you use a search engine such as Google or Yahoo and type in "online used book dealers" or something similar for your search.  Other great resources I have found are abebooks.com  (Type "Sam Campbell" in the author search and you'll find many Sam Campbell books for a good price) and LNFbooks.com (type "Campbell" in Author search).

Paula L. Redmond sent the following message:

"Dear Sir:
My name is Paula, and I can be reached at TAPD315@comcast.net. I am requesting assistance in placing an ad on your website.
Many years ago, my father had a first issue edition of "Looney Coon".  It was green bound w/ gold lettering in good condition.  The book itself was in good condition.  The author's page was signed in blue ink, "To Jason (or Jay), With Warmest regards, Sam Campbell".  We believe that one of my playmates took it in either Texas or Ohio, circa 1979-1980, because no one remembers seeing it after that time.
To many people it would just be another collector's item, but for my father it was a fond memory from his college days, as he personally met the author while on a book tour in the early 60's. If any of your regular subscribers or website visitors are in possession or know the location of that book, I would be willing to pay for its return.  Any assistance you can give in posting this would be greatly appreciated.
May you have a season of God's peace, measured by the love of family and friends,
I am, Sincerely,
     Paula Redmond,
     requestor"

"Hello, our names are Mark and Jana Novy.  We just recently had our first child.  Mark's mother keeps telling Mark to find the Sam Campbell books that she used to read to him and his siblings when they were younger.  We have looked online for these books and we ran across your name on one of the sites.  We are interested in finding some of the titles from Sam Campbell, and eventually all of them if possible.  We would like to find books that are in good to excellent condition.  Would you know how we could get ahold of these books?  We would truly appreciate any help with this matter.
Thank You.  Mark and Jana Novy"

Sandy Boudreau sent the following message:
"I am so surprised to learn about Sam Campbell.  I am a relocated Canadian living in the South.

I was talking to a friend yesterday about interesting books for our sons.  She told me about her boy loving Sam Campbell books.  She also went on and mentioned that she heard him speak a few times as a child.

It was fascinating to learn that he also lived in the Alberta area.  It intrigued me enough to follow up and search the web for his books. As a lover of nature and with three young boys, I am always looking for good literature to read to them and for them to read.

Please let me know how I can locate his books.  I would greatly appreciate any help in this venture.

Sandy Boudreau"
